Understanding Your Child's Temperament

Every child is different.

How can you best encourage, discipline, and build into your kids?

RED kids likely make statements like these:

  • I know what I’m doing.
  • My idea is better.
  • I can do it all by myself.
  • You said you would….
  • Call on me! I know the answer.
  • Hurry up! Let’s go!
  • I told you.
  • I’m finished. What’s next?
  • Can we go right now?
  • Just tell me what I have to do.

YELLOW kids often make statements like these:

  • Oh, I've got a story about that...
  • Wait until you hear this.
  • That sounds like fun! Lets do it.
  • Oops! I completely forgot.
  • They’re my (new) best friend.
  • What was the question again?
  • It was the best day ever!
  • The more, the merrier!
  • I can’t find_____ and I don’t remember where I put it.
  • Will you come with me?
  • I don’t want them to be mad at me.
  • This is boring. Let’s do something else.
  • You’re the best!

BLUE kids often make statements like these:

  • I just want to fix one more thing.
  • I’ve been thinking.
  • I made a list.
  • That might hurt their feelings.
  • Everything is ruined now.
  • I have to do something to help.
  • I can’t do it.
  • My notes are color coded.
  • I just want to be alone.
  • I know that was a bad idea.

GREEN kids often make statements like these:

  • It doesn’t matter to me. You pick.
  • Sure. That’s fine.
  • No, thanks. I’ll just watch.
  • Is there anything I can do to help?
  • I haven’t gotten around to it yet.
  • I can’t decide.
  • It was due yesterday. I’m sure I can turn it in late.
  • Good point. Let’s do it your way.
  • Why does it have to be right now.
  • Don’t worry about it. I’m not upset.
