History and Beliefs

"What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." - A.W. Tozer

Our Mission

We exist to lead people to Christ and provide steps to follow Him.

The Big Three

We Focus On Helping People Know & Experience God, Find Friends & Freedom and Make a Difference.

Know and Experience God

We want every person to truly know and experience God through a personal, life-transforming relationship with Jesus Christ.

Find Friends and Freedom

Make a Difference

We believe life change happens in the context of relationships and that God created us for community. Small Groups exist for the important purpose of bringing people together so that they can experience the freedom that Christ offers.
We want every person to be connected to a church and ultimately discover their God-given gifts and purpose and understand how they can make an eternal difference.

Our Church History

In 1919 something started growing in the hearts of a handful of friends that gave birth to something new in the fall of 1920 in downtown Columbus, Ohio, near Cypress Ave. Today Cypress Church is over 100 years strong and counting. We are ONE church in many locations. Together, we are committed to reaching the next community, the next campus, the next family, the next student, the next child, and the next person for Christ. Everything we do is filtered through our focus on loving people and walking with them as they come to Know & Experience God in a life-changing way, Find Friends and Freedom in a life-giving community, and discover their purpose to Make a Difference and fulfill the full life for which God created them.

Core Beliefs

The following are the core beliefs of Cypress Church based on the foundational truths taught in the bible. All of our teaching and ministry is rooted in and flows out of these biblical doctrines.

God

There is one eternally existing God who has three distinct persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. He is the creator of all that exists, both visible and invisible, and is therefore worthy of all glory and praise.  God is perfect in love, power, holiness, goodness, knowledge, wisdom,  justice, and mercy. He is unchangeable and therefore is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Revelation

Mankind

God has revealed himself to us through his son, Jesus Christ, who is the visible image of the invisible God, the holy scriptures, and through all of creation itself.

Humans, both male and female, were created in God's image for His glory. The first humans, Adam and Eve, were created without sin and appointed as caretakers of the rest of God's creations.

The Fall

Salvation

The Church

When Adam and Eve chose not to obey God, they ceased to be what they were made to be and became distorted images of God. This caused them to fall out of fellowship with God, and fractured all of creation ever since that time.

Jesus Christ came to reconcile us with God. He lived a life without sin and willingly died on the cross to pay the penalty for our transgressions. God raised him from the dead and now, by grace, offers as a free gift eternal life to all who follow Christ, by faith, as their Lord and Savior. That is why salvation can be found in Christ alone.

The Church is meant to be the visible body of Christ, sent into the world to glorify God and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Ressurection

Jesus Christ is returning one day to judge both the living and the dead and to usher in the fullness of God's kingdom on earth.

Our Statement of Beliefs

The sole basis of our belief is the Bible. The Scripture in its entirety is composed of the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments, which originated with God, and was given through many different chosen authors. We believe that there is one living, true, holy God, eternally existent in the Holy Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe that Jesus was miraculously conceived, born of a virgin, and sinless in life. Christ was fully man and fully God, walked our earth, lived a life of obedience, suffered at the hands of men, and died on the cross. He fully atoned for the sins of all, was bodily resurrected, and enthroned at God’s right hand as our Intercessor. Salvation is wholly a work of God’s free grace, received by repentance and faith. Each person can be made new in Christ by the Holy Spirit and thereafter continuously grow in the knowledge of God. Cypress is a local expression of the Wesleyan Church.
